18mm, apprx. 2/3 inch. Denarius with two warriors with dashing headdresses on galloping steeds. The style of old English racing prints may have come from this coin! 154 BC Goddess Republican Roma on back of coin.
18mm Republican Rome c. 154 B.C. Scribonius Denarius. The twin sons of Jupiter (called Dioscuri), Castor and Pollux - Keepers of Rome's well-being - astride galloping horses. Also known as the patron dieties of Sparta, which refers to the help given by Cleonymus of Sparta to the Tarentines in their war against the Lucanians at the Battle of the lake Regillus in 496 BC.
